A man’s pride will bring him low, but he who is of a humble spirit will obtain honor. (Proverbs 29:23 AMP)
Pride is excessive confidence in one’s own worth or abilities. God has strong sanctions against pride. He wants us to have confidence in Him, and not in our own abilities.
In 2 Chronicles 21, satan incited David to take a census. Taking the census wasn’t against God’s law but his motive was wrong. David took pride in his army. He thought he had enough men for battle and forgot that his strength was from above. This was sin in the sight of God so He sent an angel to kill 70000 people. 70000 people were killed because of David’s pride. Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall. (Proverbs 16:18 NLT)
“I am the Lord; that is my name! I will not give my glory to anyone else, nor share my praise with carved idols. (Isaiah 42:8 NLT)
Friend your pride will bring you low. Don’t put your confidence in the family you have, your money at the bank, business, houses, cars, etc. and think your own wisdom, strength, and power fetched you what you have. But Remember the Lord your God. He is the one who gives you power to be successful, in order to fulfill the covenant he confirmed to your ancestors with an oath. (Deuteronomy 8:18 NLT)
Pride can cause the collapse of your business, it can cause the death of the person you love, it can make you lose your number one client, it can make you lose what you have worked for all the days of your life. 70000 people died because David had wrong motive for taking census.
When you have eaten your fill, be sure to praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you. “But that is the time to be careful! Beware that in your plenty you do not forget the Lord your God and disobey his commands, regulations, and decrees that I am giving you today. For when you have become full and prosperous and have built fine homes to live in, and when your flocks and herds have become very large and your silver and gold have multiplied along with everything else, be careful! Do not become proud at that time and forget the Lord your God, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt. He did all this so you would never say to yourself, ‘I have achieved this wealth with my own strength and energy.’ “But I assure you of this: If you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods, worshiping and bowing down to them, you will certainly be destroyed. (Deuteronomy 8:10-14, 17, 19 NLT)
God bless you.
Very True depreacher, those who are worldly or fleshy have many ego problems, their pride as you said is about their own importance and it comes first, they reject those who don’t agree with them or commend them, even though they are in error and they also reject Godly advice and correction without offering Scriptural confirmation for rejecting it or what they share is out of context and not Spiritually discerned, this is why God tells us to put our flesh to death, it is opposed to His Truth and for us to ask for His wisdom in Christ Jesus.
And yes King David when given 3 choices, chose at first what he considered would be worse and that was to be defeated by his enemies and loose face, so God gave David what he chose instead, which was the death of some of his own people, this was David’s choice, he had been influenced by his Pagan wives and also his ego, so he made some very wrong choices and he reaped what he sowed but sadly so did others including his first wife whom he did not forgive and so she remained barren but God showed him how much he had fallen and he came to his senses.
God never goes against our free will, even today when we choose our Leaders we get what we want, if we don’t choose Godly Leadership as a Nation we suffer, many Christians chose Hitler. Atheists accuse God of evil claiming He caused the death of many in the time of King Saul and David without understanding the reasons why. God never does anything without Love being His motivation, Pagan Nations were deep into sin and many suffered especially their Children, they were burnt alive to appease Pagan gods and like it is in some Countries today, they were used for evil fleshy pleasure. God sought to prevent these Nations from polluting His people.
But as we know depreacher there is another type of Pride, which is Godly, I will just summarize them both and share a few Scriptures so we can see the difference because this comment is already long.
The two types of Pride, Godly Pride and worldly or fleshy pride, we are to have Godly Pride but as you explained not worldly pride.
What Worldly pride is…
Mark 7:22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
1 John 2:15- 17 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the Pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
What Godly Pride is …
Galatians 6: 4 Each one should understand their own actions. Then they can take Pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to others.
2 Corinthians 8:24 show these men the proof of your Love and the reason for our Pride in you, so that the Churches can see it.
2 Corinthians 5:11-12 Because we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade others. It is plain to God what we are, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience. We are giving you an opportunity to take Pride in us not trying to commend ourselves again to you , so that you have an answer for those who take Pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart.
Romans 11:13b I take Pride in my Ministry.
To have Godly Love for oneself is to take Pride in our position in Christ Jesus and as a Christian I also take Godly Pride in my Ministry like Paul did to those who are in darkness, and rejoice with those who are not, as I’m sure you do too depreacher.
Thanks for the opportunity to share with you.
Christian Love from both of us – Anne
